Weather: Tornadoes & Hail Storms

We had an awful storm blow through last night. It was one of those sudden storms where you go from no rain to a torrential downpour in a matter of minutes. The hail was really blasting our patio and we called Gess to come and look so she could see what it hail actually was.

As with everything else, we turn these moments into teaching moments. We have talked about weather and warnings and what to do, but you know that is never like the real thing. So after she watched the hail, we wrote the word and talked about it. From there it was into the bathroom as a tornado warning came across the radio.

Now, hopefully, she will never see a tornado up close, so we are using the internet for that. We spent our morning discussing weather safety and I found a couple of resources I thought I would share. Please let me know what resources you use to teach weather safety to your kids too!

One was a printable coloring book called Bill and Maria Learn About Tornado Safety provided by the NOAA National Severe Storm Laboratory.

Here is a video geared towards teaching kids about weather and tornado safety.

Wow, what a storm! We had some hail come through earlier in the year, but it was at night so I didn't get many good pics. Great links, thanks for posting those. :)

Great information! I always get nervous when we get bad storms like that.

That looks like one heck of a storm, but a tornado warning is really scary, we don't get those in RI.

Where in KS are you? I grew up in KS - Liberal is my hometown (though I haven't been there since my parents moved over 10 years ago). I went to KU and then lived in KC for a couple of years.
I get a kick out of people in the East because they freak out at the slightest rumble of thunder - thinking there is a tornado.
Anyway - the pics remind me of a couple of storms we had growing up that required pretty much the whole town to get new roofs and car windshields :)

we just had severe storms this week, with tornado warnings - in Maryland! when we moved here, I really didn't think tornadoes would be a big concern (and they're not, really) but we've had several in the area and frequently have had warnings. It's best to always be prepared, no matter where you are!

We have had some severe storms already this year, but no tornado watches/warnings yet. Of course, we are reading the book Tornado for the Crew and the children are having dreams about tornadoes and worrying. So we have had some talks and will be having more.
Thanks for sharing on Throwback Thursday. I can't wait to see what you share this week.
